Artist Bio

I am a self-taught artist who started in New England with the blues, greys and greens of the ocean. As a Texas artist, I am still inspired by the blues of the oceans of Bluebonnets along the grey highways. You will find these colors lingering on my mind as they are represented in shapes and forms on my surfaces

Painting is my Valium and I thrive on finding new ways to interleave life into every piece using various mediums and tools. My favorite tool is the pallet knife which is occasionally replaced by an old discarded credit card and sometimes even a brush or two. I am fascinated with texture and experiment with many ways to build it into my pieces.

The path I am on is an exciting journey where acrylic paint travels across canvas and paper, gets scraped off, painted over and, under its own power (much as the characters write the story for the author), it creates the piece for me.

My art has been displayed in various shows in the area and pieces have found their way into the private collections of many.

I thank Spirit and the Universe for my ability to express myself on the canvas and for allowing me to touch others with that gift.

Title: Transfer And Collage Workshop
Location: Carpenter Recreation Center
Link out: Click here

Description: Mary Morgan, PAA member, will teach this class. Mary has thirty years of experience teaching and currently teaches at Dallas Baptist University and TCC (Southeast campus) as an adjunct professor of Painting. She has also received an award for her work made of reclaimed objects at PAA Multicultural exhibition in October 2011.

This workshop is a fun filled and a learning experience for any artist who wants to try something new and or different. A transfer is using an image (it can be a laser jet copy of a photograph or artwork) using a printmaking technique adhering it to a surface becomes a part of your artwork. Look at artist Robert Rauschenberg for examples. This particular workshop will use gel medium to adhere the transfer to the surface not acetone. A collage is attaching anything that can be glued to a surface. In this particular workshop I would recommend using paper or fabric, but would not exclude wood or rope or anything that can be easily glued. Even using another artwork that you do not mind tearing up is a good idea.
LIST OF MATERIALS
1) A LASER JET COPY OF AN ARTWORK OR PHOTOGRAPH, make sure it is a copy from a laser jet ink printer. You may use multiples if you wish, so you may want to bring more than one image.
2) GEL MEDIUM, CAN BE GLOSS OR MATTE
3) RAGS, SPONGE OR PAPER TOWELS
4) A GROUND FOR YOUR IMAGE. I LIKE USING CANVAS OR PANEL.
5) ACRYLIC PAINTS, BRUSHES ETC.
6) COLLAGE ANYTHING YOU CHOOSE
7) GOLD LEAF IS ANOTHER OPTION IF YOU WISH TO WORK WITH IT.
CONTAINER FOR HOLDING WATER FOR CLEANING BRUSHES AND OR A SPRAY BOTTLE TO KEEP IMAGE DAMP WHILE TRANSFERRING.
Start Time: 09:30
Date: 2012-01-21
End Time: 16:00

Artist Bio

Janice Hamilton paints brilliantly colored oil and pastel paintings.

“Although color and light are a constant joy to me”, she says, “I strive to convey the subtleties that surround us.”

Janice has had a desire to paint since childhood, being influenced by watching her mother colorfully decorate their home.

She took art classes and workshops from numerous nationally known artists, such as Rudy Calao, Paul Leveille, Leo Smith and Gregg Kreutz. These artists, and others, gave her the skills and confidence to work in oils, quickly earning her acceptance in numerous award shows. She enjoys painting florals, still life and landscapes.

Later she had an opportunity to study pastel portraiture, falling in love with both the medium and the subject. Soon she branched out into other subjects with her pastels, winning awards and being invited to teach at various art groups. She taught pastel and portrait painting classes at Richland and Brookhaven Community Colleges.

As a member of the Oil Painters of America, Janice Hamilton has been accepted into their shows, displaying her art in galleries around the country. Using the plein aire skills she developed as a member of the Society of Outdoor Painters, she has done small sketches from Europe, Canada and the United States to be used later for larger paintings.

In the 2003 June/July issue of the International Artists Magazine, she was featured as one of the “Master Pastel Artists of the World”. She was also included in the “Artists of Texas” Volume IV magazine.

Using her degree in Education, she taught for the Texas Instrument Art Club for 20 years. She recently added a class at the Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Janice Hamilton has also served on the ACA Executive Board, as both President and Executive Director. She was the President of the Pastel Society of the Southwest and is a member of the Degas Pastel Society and the Oil Painters of America.

Artist Bio

I like to call what I’m doing modern Celtic art, and also art for the left brain. You can also see Native American style influences in there too. I still try to follow tradition in the basic design where I can. A perfect design has only one line, and that line goes alternately over and under itself evenly through the entire design. But sometimes that doesn’t convey what I want, and then I can get a little creatively different, and end up with something that goes with the whole design, but may not be quite perfectly matched in the over/unders, or be made of multiple lines. Or maybe it needs to be cropped, or distorted, or curved to make the pattern I want. For my landscapes, I have to fill up the entire space. Every knot and line is important in conveying a sense of the space being shown. For the others, it’s more important to have an original and unique design for each element in the work.

Artist Statement

The ability to create beauty and interest on canvas, or with found objects, is my alter to the sublime – a connection to Spirit. In whatever form I take – watercolor, acrylic, mixed media – I am always learning. My art has its own life: it has birth and it evolves into an art form – good or bad – but never indifferent. My art demands time and energy, but gives me joy and purpose. It is my thank you to the universe. Life is magic and the world is art.

Jerry Smith was born and raised in rural western Kansas, and never saw a museum (or McDonalds) until he was 18. He graduated from Emporia State University with a BFA and earned an MFA from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
He has participated in over 120 one man and juried exhibitions. Most recently he exhibited at the 4th Annual National Exhibition at Sylvia White gallery in Ventura, CA; K Space Contemporary’s Third Coast National in Corpus Christi, and was selected for an award by Guggenheim Curator Nathan Trotman, who judged the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition’s National Exhibition show in NYC.

He is in his sixth year at Collin College teaching Art Appreciation, Painting and Drawing. He resides in Plano with his beautiful Texas native wife, two cats and a dog, finds wonderful art gems on eBay, and is growing more handsome every day.

Artist Bio

After spending many years in the world of finance, I discovered my passion for mixed media art. I’m a self-taught artist and I’m learning as I go.
I have always been drawn to abstract art and collage. I love the colors and the movement and I tend to create pieces with lots of texture. I try to get an image in my mind of what I want the work to be before I start, but this often changes and develops as I go. The finished product is often very different than what I had initially envisioned, but that is the beauty of art for me – discovering as I go.
