125 Plano Arts Association 7th Annual Juried Show

The Plano Art Association “125″ Show is an annual event, held at the Arts Gallery in Plano (the gallery for Collin College art school). Open to all artists who live within 125 miles of Plano, it is a non-thematic show that showcases the best of the artistic talent in the Metroplex area, in a variety of areas.

This year, the show will be juried by  artist Ryder Richards and Laura Green, Director of Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden (their biographies are below).

There are three categories (2-D, 3-D and Print & Photography), each of which will be awarded a first, second and third place award ($500, $350, and $150), plus a Grand Prize of $1000.

Applying can be done entirely online; first, submit the details and images of each work, then pay by paypal on the following page.

The show runs from March 8th, until April 4th.

The 125 Show Jurors, 2011

Laura Green:

Laura Green is the Director of Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden, in Dallas, where she has worked since 1997.  She received her Bachelors with a double major in Art History and Music from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  She has been active with the Junior Associates Circle of the Dallas Museum of Art for over 10 years, having served as Co-Chair and currently serves on their Advisory Committee.  She also serves on the Avant-Garde Society Executive Committee at the Nasher Sculpture Center.  She is a graduate of the Leadership Arts Institute of the Business Council for the Arts, and currently serves on the Steering Committee for the Leadership Arts Alumni Association.  She also serves as a Steering Committee member of the Marquee Circle of the AT&T Performing Arts Center and is on the Advisory Committee for Art This Week.  Her volunteer work includes the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas, Dallas Art Dealers Association, Highland Park United Methodist Church, and the Junior League of Dallas.

Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden was founded in 1954 by Margaret and Donald Vogel.  The gallery represents established and emerging contemporary artists working in inventive ways with traditional media.  Along with Gallery Director Laura Green, Cheryl and Kevin Vogel continue to build on the tradition forged by his parents.

Ryder Richards:

Ryder Richards, born in September of 1977, grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Texas Tech University with a minor in drawing and architecture. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting on a scholarship from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Ryder has studied art in Italy, Spain, and Germany during his European travels.

Richards is currently an Instructor and the Gallery Coordinator for Richland College in Dallas, Texas. He is co- founder of the Ryder Jon Piotrs Nomadic Gallery, a traveling art gallery in the form of a Ryder truck, and Culture Laboratory, a collective of 12 American artists interested in the exchange of ideas and the social development of art in the 21st century.

Known for his much artistic collaboration, Richards continues to explore art as social experience. He is the recipient of several scholarships and awards for his achievements in art, including residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Vermont; Hilmsen, Germany; Paducah, Kentucky and Portales, New Mexico.


The Details


Open to all artists 18 and older living in the 125 mile radius around Plano.

Artwork requirements:
There are three categories

  • 2-D Artwork  (Two-Dimensional Artworks)
  • 3-D Artworks (Three-Dimensional Artworks)
  • Printmaking, Photography (Traditional & Digital).

Awards:

Each category will offer prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, plus one overall Grand Prize Winner of $1,000.

Submitted artwork must be original, completed within the last two years without instructor supervision. Work previously accepted into the 125 Show or THE ARTS gallery are ineligible. Works must not be copies of another artist’s work (including photographs). Computer generated, photographic, and offset-printed reproductions of original works are ineligible. PAA reserves the right to reject any work not meeting eligibility requirements or deemed inappropriate to hang in the gallery, even after the image has been accepted.

Size Limitation

Maximum frame size 50 x 50 inches in either dimension.

A diptych or triptych must be framed in single frame or ready to hang as a group, and meet the 50 inch maximum.

Sculpture must be no larger than 4 x 4 feet

Each artist may submit up to 3 works of art online at  125 Show Application

OR

you can mail a non-returnable CD, with the print application form, along with a check payable to Plano Arts Association.

Completed form and details of images and digital GIF/JPEG images and fees must be received by midnight, February 12, 2012.

Fees (ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.)
Entry fee for PAA members: $25 for up to 3 entries
Entry fees for non-members: $35 for up to 3 entries

Image Formatting & File Naming

ONLY Digital Images will be accepted. Please keep all files to less than 2 mbs. Images should show ONLY the work of art (no frame, easel or background).

Name each GIF or JPG file with the artist’s last name and first initial, followed by the image number as you listed on the online form and finally the category initial (so we can tell which image belongs with which information):

Images of accepted entries will become the property of PAA and THE ARTS gallery at Collin College to be  used  only for the catalogue and other printed material, archives, website and for educational purposes. PAA is not responsible for lost or misdirected mail. CDs will not be returned.

Hanging

All works must be wired with screw eyes, ready to hang, with backing. NO sawtooth hangers.

Paintings with loose or damaged frames will not be accepted. Keep the frame simple and lightweight.
Canvasses with staples visible along the sides will not be accepted; these works must be framed.

Sales
All sales from this show will be handled through the Plano Art Association. As a non-profit agency, PAA requests a volunteer 15% commission on all sold Artwork toward the PAA activities. The artist is liable for arranging payment of sales tax.

Our jurors will select works for inclusion from the entries, and artists will be notified by email on February 21st.

Hand-delivered entries must be delivered on Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 – 2pm, or either Mon/Tues, Feb 27/28th 9am-8pm.

Entries received after 8 p.m. will not be displayed on February 28th.

As this is a 125-Show (and artists should live within 125 miles of Plano) most of the works will be local. However, if you need to make arrangements to mail works, please contact planoartassoc@gmail.com to make arrangements.

Delivery of Works & Reception

We are planning an Opening Reception on Wednesday March 21st.

Prizes are: $1000 Grand Prize Winner; each category of 2-D, 3-D and Print & Photography will have First, Second and Third Place awards, of $500, $300 and $150 respectively. Honorable Mentions may be awarded at the judges discretion.

Other pick-up times: Thursday April 5th, 9am-8pm or Monday 9th April but the campus is closed Fri-Sun.

Artists who do not pick up their entries during the appropriate time will be charged a storage fee of $4 per day payable to the Plano Arts Association.
